School History

HistoryFor over 100 years Catholic education has been a vital par of the Butte community.  Butte Central Catholic Schools have provided over 16,000 young men and women wit an outstanding education deeply rooted in the proud traditions of the Catholic faith.  Throughout this century of enduring success, Butte Central has thrived through a remarkable resilience and tremendous spirit for survival.  Personal attention, high expectations, strong discipline, Christian values, and a powerful drive toward excellence speak to Butte Central’s motto of “Faith, Tradition, and Commitment.

Historical Timeline of the Butte Central Catholic School System

1881 Sisters of Mercy begin to teach the children of Butte.
1887 Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth begin offering classes in St. Patrick’s Church.
1889 The first Catholic school building is completed and St. Patrick’s School is opened.
1892 Catholic high school classes are offered for the first time in Butte signaling the founding of Butte Central Catholic High School
History1924 Bishop Carroll orders that Girls’ Central and Boys’ Central be opened
1992 Butte Central Catholic Schools celebrated the 100-year anniversary of Butte Central Catholic High School.
1994 Preschool classes are added to Central Catholic Elementary.
2001 Noah’s Ark Day Care Program is opened at Central Catholic Elementary.
2005 The Maroon Activities Center (MAC) is opened in East Butte near the Belmont Mine Headframe.

From its humble beginnings well over a century ago to the present, Butte Central Schools have live the dream of providing a Catholic education to the youth of the “Butte Community.”  Butte Central Catholic Schools now serve a growing enrollment of over 600 students in preschool through high school.

This growth and optimism have added a spirited enthusiasm and strength to the Butte Central Catholic School System.
