As part of preparing for Teacher Appreciation Week, our 7th grade students recently partnered with younger students in kindergarten through 2nd grade for a meaningful social-emotional learning (SEL) activity centered on gratitude, with the guidance of our school counselor, Mrs. Cassidy.
During the lesson, 7th graders stepped into leadership roles, helping guide younger students through conversations about what gratitude means and why it matters. Together, students discussed the importance of recognizing the people in our lives who support, teach, and encourage us each day. The older students modeled thoughtful reflection while helping the younger classes share ideas, create thank-you messages, and practice expressing appreciation in age-appropriate ways.

The collaboration created a special opportunity for students across grade levels to connect. The younger students looked up to the 7th graders, while the older students demonstrated patience, kindness, and mentorship as they worked alongside them. It was a great example of how leadership and empathy can grow through shared experiences.

This activity not only helped students prepare for Teacher Appreciation Week, but also reinforced important SEL skills such as perspective-taking, communication, and building positive relationships. Most importantly, it reminded everyone that gratitude is something we can practice every day—and that even small acts of appreciation can make a big impact in our school community.
