McGree Stays Home: Butte Central Senior Signs with Montana Tech Golf

Senior golfer Will McGree made his college choice feel like a natural next step, not a headline. The Butte Central standout sat at a table surrounded by family and teammates, quietly signing the papers that will keep him in his hometown as he joins the Montana Tech golf program

A hometown decision

McGree’s signing with the Orediggers locks in the next chapter of a prep career built on steady improvement and competitive consistency for the Maroons. Instead of heading out of town, he chose to keep chasing his goals on the same hills and fairways that shaped his game.

The senior has been a familiar name on Class A leaderboards, part of a McGree golfing line that has routinely pushed into contention at the state level. That experience against top competition made him an appealing fit for a Montana Tech program that leans heavily on in‑state talent.

Built on family, faith, and fairways

Golf has long been a family affair for the McGrees, and Will’s success is woven into that story. Siblings and relatives have shared state tournaments, early‑morning practices, and long summer rounds on Butte courses, creating a foundation that blended competition with support.

That background shows in the way he carries himself for Butte Central

calm on the course, respectful off it, and willing to do the steady, unglamorous work that golf demands. Coaches and teachers have seen the same traits in the classroom and hallways, where expectations for BC students extend well beyond scorecards.

Tech gets a proven competitor

Montana Tech’s golf programs have carved out a reputation for development and academic success in recent seasons, consistently producing all‑league performers and Academic All‑Frontier honorees. McGree steps into that culture with a resume that already includes state‑tournament pressure and years of representing his school at a high level.

Staying in Butte also means he joins a college program that understands the value of local recruits who know the community and embrace its blue‑collar identity. For the Orediggers, adding McGree is another investment in a pipeline that has helped keep Montana talent close to home.

A proud day for Butte Central

For Butte Central, the signing is about more than one athlete moving on to college golf

it’s a snapshot of what the school hopes to be about. A student who grew up in maroon, leaned on family and faith, and now gets to carry those same values a few blocks up the hill in green and copper.

As McGree trades a Maroon bag for an Oredigger one, he does it with a community behind him and plenty of golf still in front of him. The next time he walks to the first tee in Butte, it will be as a Montana Tech golfer but still very much a Butte Central kid at heart.
