Cade Irons takes 3rd at the Montana State Science Fair!!!

A Butte Central Junior High student recently earned recognition at the state level for his work in science and engineering.

Seventh grader Cade Irons represented Butte Central at the Montana State Science Fair, with his project Slipstream: the science of speed and airflow, where he earned third place for his project. In addition to placing in the competition, Cade was also recognized for his work in the field of space and aeronautical engineering, highlighting the depth of research and creativity he brought to his project.

The Montana State Science Fair brings together students from across the state to present original research projects in a variety of scientific fields. Students spend months developing their ideas, conducting experiments, and preparing presentations that are judged by professionals and educators.

Cade’s success at the state level reflects the curiosity and dedication he put into exploring concepts related to aerospace and engineering. Competing against students from throughout Montana, he demonstrated strong research skills and an ability to clearly communicate complex scientific ideas.

Butte Central Junior High continues to encourage students to pursue interests in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through hands-on learning opportunities and participation in events such as the state science fair. Cade’s accomplishment highlights the potential of young scientists at Butte Central and the importance of supporting student curiosity and innovation.

His third-place finish and recognition in space and aeronautical engineering stand as an impressive achievement for the young researcher and a proud moment for the Butte Central community.

Held annually and open to middle and high school students from across Montana, the Montana Science Fair provides an opportunity for students to present original research and compete for top honors. The event is affiliated with the International Science and Engineering Fair and has welcomed more than 20,000 student participants since its founding in 1955.

This year, Butte Central was represented by six students, each bringing unique projects and ideas to the competition. Nearly 300 students from across Montana participated in the 71st annual event, making the fair both highly competitive and an exciting opportunity for young researchers to collaborate and learn from one another.

While attending the fair, the Butte Central students not only presented their research projects but also had the opportunity to tour facilities, interact with fellow competitors, and explore various science and technology demonstrations connected to the event. Experiences like these help students deepen their understanding of the scientific process while building confidence in presenting their work.

Participation in the Montana Science Fair reflects the strong emphasis on STEM learning at Butte Central. Through classroom instruction, research projects, and hands-on opportunities such as the school’s STEM lab, students are encouraged to explore questions, test ideas, and develop solutions using real scientific methods.

Teachers and administrators praised the students for their dedication and hard work throughout the project process. Preparing for the fair requires months of research, experimentation, and analysis, culminating in presentations that clearly communicate each student’s findings.

The success of the Butte Central students highlights the importance of curiosity and perseverance in academic achievement. By competing at the state level, these students demonstrated not only their scientific knowledge but also their willingness to take on challenges and represent their school community.

As Butte Central continues to expand its STEM programs and encourage research-based learning, opportunities like the Montana Science Fair will remain an important platform for students to explore their passions and pursue excellence in science.
